It’s hard to know where to begin with these chocolate chips. Voted “Best Tasting Sugar Free Chocolate”, Chocoperfection Dark Baking Chips certainly live up to its vote. These dainty little buttons of brevity and bling deliver the oohs and the ahhs, even straight from the bag.
While I choked on the initial cost ($17 for a 16 ounce bag), and almost cried when I saw how small this package is, I was more resolute than ever to apply this product with even greater scrutiny to several applications over the last few days. And guess what… I have yet to find a single fault with the product.
- As ganache: The chips melted beautifully, without chalkiness or possible other issues. The results were perfect, and the product behaved exactly like chocolate.
- As baking chocolate: When I needed a chocolate cake, I was able to melt the chocolate with butter in the microwave and add to the batter. The cake turned out beautifully.
- As a garnish: Thrown on top of fresh whipped cream in the Mud Pie Cheesecake, these delicious morsels couldn’t have been any more like regular chocolate chips if they had tried.
- As chips in a recipe: These behaved exactly as standard chocolate chips, with the right texture and flavor.
To boot, I preferred using these chips to Lindt 85% dark chocolate (and you know how I love Lindt) since it’s ‘cheaper’ in terms of carbohydrates and calories per every 1 ounce serving (197/2 net c vs Lindt 210/5 net c).
The chips contain lecithin (for those watching soy), and the label warns that the product may contain traces of peanuts or tree nuts as the standard warning (many chocolates supply the same warning), neither particularly problematic but worth mentioning.
While the bag of Dark chips costs roughly $1 an ounce (almost twice the cost of the Lindt), a little bit of chip goes a long way, performing admirably in several full-serving applications and I still have a good third of the bag left for even more experimentation. Not bad.. The package is also resealable, which makes storage simple.
Perhaps an unforeseen benefit of the more pronounced cost of this product is the message it hits home: Sweets should be thought of more as a condiment and not the main course. An important message, regardless of lifestyle.
