These sassy, savory meatballs are the perfect appetizer for barbecues, tailgating parties and potlucks. In fact, I get a lot of compliments on how amazing the sauce is; you can even use it with cocktail wieners (simple follow the process for steeping the wieners in the sauce instead of the meatballs)!
Loaded with flavor, this recipe is gluten free, sugar free and dairy free, so you’ll please the palate and wow friends and family with food that doesn’t even taste like it’s good for you. Imagine that.
Instructions are included for crock pot and for stove top, and meatballs are cooked ahead of time for ease and because the meat behaves nicely in the sauce this way.
Easy Barbecue Meatballs
For the meatballs:
1 lb ground beef
1 large egg
1/4 cup flax seed meal
1 tsp salt
1 tsp parsley
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp pepper
For the sauce:
1/2 cup sugar free ketchup
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
3 tbsp brown sugar replacement
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup chopped sweet yellow onion
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Form meat mixture into walnut-sized balls and place in a baking pan with sides.
Bake for 20 minutes. Move meatballs to a shallow frying large enough to accommodate the meatballs or crock pot. Combine sauce ingredients in bowl. Pour over meatballs. Simmer over medium low heat on the stove for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes; or if using a crock pot, set to low for an hour, and then low until serving, at least 2 hour ahead of time.
Keep meatballs covered to retain sauce. Serve warm with toothpicks for easy serving.
Makes about 36 meatballs, or 9 servings.
Per 4 meatballs: 90 Cals.; 4 g Carbs.; 1 g Fiber; 3 g Net Carbs. ; 11 g Protein; 4 g Fat
Hmm, I wonder if you could use your sauce recipe with some mustard in it to make a sloppy joe sauce. This sounds good, I have kind of missed barbecue sauce I will try it for sure. I just want to thank you again for all your support and recipes, I have gone through a little weak spell and had way too many off plan days, but I am happy to say that even though my wieght loss has significantly stalled, I am down another size in jeans, so maybe my body is starting to tone up a bit. just the 69 pounds I have lost since last spring have made a major difference in my knees and ankles. My doctor is very impressed and is having to lower my thyroid medication. . .yay less meds. I just cannot even beigin to explain how much better I feel, anyone who is hesitating about a low carb eating plan, the benefits far outwiegh any dietary inconveniences. Years ago doctors told me to go on low carb for my polycystic ovaries, now at 44 I have regular periods for the first time since my teens, I wish I had not hesitated so long.
I made this tonight. It was so good that even the kiddo asked for seconds! Definite keeper.
YAY!! You know it is a keep when it is kiddo approved!
Mmm… This sounds delicious! Can anyone recommend a sugar free ketchup recipe, or a readily available brand of sugar free ketchup? I used to enjoy the Heinz Reduced Sugar version, but it’s expensive and still contains sugar. Thanks in advance!
I would also love a sugar free low carb recipe for catsup! I live off shore and in my new country there is no low carb anything! So everything is from scratch! I love this website!
What is sweet yellow onion? Any more info on this would be great. I’ve never heard of this in Australia (anyone else?). We have brown onions (the regular type), red onions (for salads mostly), spring onions (you know the ones that grow on the bottom of what looks like shallots and I think that’s about it.
These sound great and I’d love to make them but I’m just not sure on this one ingredient.
You can use your onion of choice. I know in different parts of the world the types of onions vary.
sweet yellow onion in the US refers to Vidalia Onions grown in South Georgia or Texas.

Hope the links help
What a great way to add fiber and nutrition to meatballs..flax seed. Great idea! What do you mean by brown sugar replacement? Are you referring to white sugar and molasses or is there a sugar-free brown substitute that I don’t know about.
Thanks!
