Just when you thought erythritol might be made of unicorns frolicking through Robert Pattison’s hair…
Erythritol is made from stuff like… ready for this… corn!
Another reason to watch those sugar alcohols. Sure, this one causes supposedly less toidy time, but that’s not a reason to embrace it as the new ‘it’ sweetener.
While made from birch bark in the past, the corn industry has been working its naughty no no magic on erythritol and has for some time.
One product, Now, states :”Erythritol has been part of the human diet for thousands of years due to its presence in foods such as pears, melons, grapes and mushrooms. Now Erythritol is 100% pure and derived from a corn source.”
Eww!
What do you think about all of these sugar alcohols coming from corn?
it does bugs me. but I’ll still take erythritol over splenda any day.
Erythritol has 0.2 calorie per gram, a glycemic index of 0 and 80% of what you ingest is excreted in your urine. Frankly, I don’t care if it’s made out of fermented babies, I’m using it.
The only sugar alcohol I use is erythritol. It has 0 effect on my BGLs and weight (or bathroom habits). I would much rather use erythritol, which is made by fermenting natural sugars, than a chemical.
Sure, it’s all fermented (babies? OK. I wouldn’t ferment babies.), but it’s still made from corn, and that’s where I’m like aw hells naw!
King Corn is a totally-worth-a-watch documentary that says, “Whoa Nelly!” when it comes to the corn industry.
We’re paying farmers to grow inedible crops for human consumption that have to be processed in order to be ingested.
I am not anti corn, but I’m not a fan of what the crop really stands for right now, in terms of Frankenfoods, pesticides and government subsidies.
I just wish they’d label it so that people with corn allergies know what the source is!
and I just can’t believe the typo in my original comment! *cringe*
I almost can’t taste it. I like the way they’ve blended it with stevia, though, because I don’t much like stevia by itself.
I wish “natural sweeteners” like honey really were better for you, I’d totally just use those instead.
You forgot one thing….erythitol is made from GMO corn!
unless you purchase Erythritol made from organic non Gmo corn☺️
Right, GMO corn, because virtually all corn is gmo corn now. We searched for another erithritol and found one from Paraguay that is made from sugar cane. However it is not available in bulk. The real problem is that GMO products cause inflammation. Check it out. I'd forget xylitol as well as erythritol unless you can find birch xylitol or sugar cane erYthritol (Whole Foods sells this).
i thought I completely eliminated corn from my diet and could not figure out why I was still breaking out. Turns out I was getting a daily does of it in my Truvia.
I use xyla. Xylitol made from the birch tree.
I was just going to say that as someone with a severe corn allergy.
Erythritol is made from Corn. Corn is now a genetically modified substance whose seed is encased in the poisonous chemical glyphosate. So NO, Erythritol is NOT natural and is NOT the same as stevia which is from the stevia leaf. By the way, most alcohol based sweetened are now created from CORN! Good luck!
Curious whether people with corn allergies react to corn-based erythritol
