Forgive me, readers, for I have sinned with my fork.
I didn’t make the best food choices this weekend. As you could see from last week’s menus, I was great Thursday! I mean, three servings of cranberries and yams, but that was over the day, and they didn’t contain much–if any–sugar.
I was even decent Friday.
Fast forward to Saturday when I went for pizza toppings and two helpings of cherry crisp with Cool Whip (my homemade with our tree cherries, but still not gluten free), some peppermint toffee and cranberries, yams, and potato chip crumbs. Potatoes and gluten and sugar–oh my!
No, I’m not proud of me either. I gained 7 pounds in 36 hours due to the water weight alone from inflammation alone. Not fun. Needless to say, I took yesterday to eat only when hungry (naturally, my blood sugar told me it was hungry more often). Today I’m not feeling well and have a slight cold/virus coming on, so I’ll be taking some vitamins and resting.
I loved everything I ate, but I could see me snarfing down the rest of the pan of cherry crisp and whatnot, so I am really proud of myself! I am, however, looking forward to making healthy, delicious foods like Anne’s Pad Thai again this week and putting the temptations of Thanksgiving behind me–and honeys I have a big behind to put behind me.
Because I’m not feeling well (for realsies), I am skipping TOPS today and reading my best friend’s latest ebook to try and recuperate. I think I might have a virus coming on (it turns out that I do!)
Now on to how I’ve been doing with our Mid-Year Challenge… Be sure to do your thing. I am thrilled share my progress and thoughts, but I’m not the person you should necessarily look to for dieting advice (I’m not a paid nosh-a-titian). Monday, November 26
I ate this:
Breakfast: Nothing. I feel a wee bit blargy.
Lunch: Taco Star
Dinner: Toppings from a pizza from a local pizza place we used to frequent more (before I decided to stop eating a lot of bread)
Exercise: Laundry. Today that’s enough. Trust me! lol
Notes: I am so back to behaving! My best friend and I are pledging to lose 10 pounds by Christmas!
What I learned:
I am writing this to reminding myself what happens when I have potatoes and gluten and overindulged in cheese from pizza toppings (I have an intolerance to both).
I spent all day yesterday dizzy, swollen, up 7 pounds, sniffly, moody, irrational, bloated, broke out, tired, preternaturally hungry (I’m never hungry), crave-y, crabby, hyper-aware, and stressed. I also think as a direct result, because my immune system was battling me poisoning my system, I managed to catch a slight virus (or I had it already and it decided to remind me it was there).
Of course, hormones (monthly) don’t help, but this was seriously exacerbated. I can’t imagine what I had to be like before I eradicated the foods I’m intolerant of. :^o
I wonder how many people live sick every day for their entire lives, never even aware they’re allergic and compromising their immune systems and wearing themselves down in the process.
Understanding the way I’ve felt the last 24 hours, and knowing that the endorphins from harm to my body made me feel “good” from the food allergies is sobering. Eating foods I’m allergic to is a physical/chemical sham that causes damage to the blood/brain barrier and to the gut. It’s a drug addiction, only the addiction is to the negative side effects of the chemicals causing the changes (namely nightshades and wheat).
Who needs that?
PS. It turns out I have a slight flu/virus, because my son has it. It’s hard to give someone second-hand gluten intolerance (ha!). Still, what I said I meant, and I know quite a few of those symptoms are definitely due to gluten and potatoes…
Enjoy that you had an indulgent spree, but now it’s time to get back on the wagon! Sober up! 🙂 This coming from the world’s worst food binger! Thanks for sharing as a reminder, but you’ve come SO FAR – your progress is inspiring! Don’t stop now!
It ends up my not feeling well is more or less the result of a virus… I hope to feel well soon. My son has it as well…
Oh Jamie why do we do this to ourselves? I am the same way. A naturopath I see told me when I eat these things that my body can’t handle, even if it’s small amounts or once in a while “for a treat”, it’s like telling myself ” here just eat this little bit of poison. It tastes so good.” Stupid huh?
Hi there! It turns out I have a bit of a virus! The foods didn’t help, but I’m not sick as a result of them, thankfully.
Hi there! It turns out I have a bit of a virus! Thanks to my son… 😀
I am sorry you learned once again that those foods are bad, as we ALL do two to three times a year. Nasty feelings, all of it, but why does it have to feel so good going down into our tummies?? Feel better quickly!
Hi Jamie,
I’m so sorry you’re feeling so icky.
My plan for Thanksgiving was to make Oopsie Stuffing to avoid the temptation of my mother’s. Unfortunately, my oven was only repaired yesterday.
So, I fell to the temptations of a few treats on Thanksgiving. Not much, but all were allergy inducing foods.
I spent the whole weekend feeling sick, fuzzy, irritable, and very sleepy. I put on 4.5 pounds overnight!
I keep being challenged by family and friends about my sensitivities to wheat/gluten, nightshades, and wine. (Well, not the wine, that one landed me in the ER after I stopped breathing. Red wine allergy was the conclusion, but I was advised not to even try white wine, which I love with my turkey dinner).
They keep asking with a smirk: “Well, have you been tested by your doctor?”
I tell them that my doc accepted my own elimination diet patterns to test each allergy as good enough.
Now I don’t care who challenges me! I was sick this past weekend, and I’m just starting to feel well enough to be up and about and have lost half of the 4.5 pounds I put on. The message has hit home that this is for real and serious “stuff”!
I will be busy making and freezing low carb, allergy free treats for myself for Christmas.
Thank you for being here, feel better, and don’t forget to drink lots of water!
A toast to good health! (with water, of course).
I thought I was the only one that felt this way on Friday! I tried to eat well thanksgiving but gave in to a spoonful of mashed potatoes, stuffing and two biscuits. Lets just say the next day I felt like I got hit by a truck. I had a migraine and couldn’t keep anything down. Definitely not worth eating that stuff if I’m going to feel that way the next day.
Get well soon! Eat some bacon! That should fix you right up!
My heartfelt sympathy that you are so “under the weather!”
Look at the bright side…
Thank goodness there is only Christmas left!
Ok…oops forgot New Year’s! WE WILL survive! Eat Good Food!
P.S. My stuffing is all pork, beef and veal…ultra low carb…with onions and plenty of poultry seasoning…stuffed onto the bird once cooked! So other than the onions…it is truly low carb!
Regards,
Glad
As always I appreciate your honesty. Around the holiday times, I tend to eat too much of the wrong stuff the days after because I don’t want to waste food. Arrgh, I should just freeze it for a side dish for my family!!
Well, Jamie, I managed to be good on Thanksgiving–only with planned-in-advance carby things (and avoidance of other things). BUT for some strange reason, the next day I was constantly eating. I kept it low-carb, but still… Not good. The next day I was battling a cold and didn’t really want to eat anything. I had my usual two coffees with an LC “milk” and, I think, a square of dark chocolate. Then I just didn’t eat for the rest of the day… until I consumed a piece of non-LC pumpkin chiffon pie. The next day I was back to plan, but I admit that I got a pre-LC muffin out of the freezer and put it on a plate. I stared at it for a while and then decided that I shouldn’t use being sick as an excuse to eat such things, so I put it back into the freezer. I have a problem with breakfasts and ended up eating one Atkins bar (from my storm provisions), 1 square of chocolate, two coffees with the usual “milk”. I just ate some fruit (a la Montignac) and will have a small LC meal later.
Anyway, your post inspired me to confess my own sins.
Jamie, thanks for writing this. I needed to hear it.
