While this recipe is lower sugar, since you are likely adding no sugar in ingredient form, apples, themselves, contain natural sugars.
Thankfully, Granny Smith apples also contain an appreciable amount of fiber as well.
Use this topping with coffee cakes, in cakes, on a favorite, frozen dessert, or on top of a cheesecake, as is seen here, with my Caramel Apple Cheesecake.
For the brown sugar I typically go with my blend (recipe here), but feel free to use whatever you like most.
Pecan Apple Topping
½ cup brown sugar replacement in a substitute
1 peeled and diced (about 1.5 cups) Granny Smith apple
1 cup roughly chopped pecans
1 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/3 cup butter
Combine and cook on the stove top for 10 minutes over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Let cool completely.
YIELD: Roughly 2 cups, or 8, 1/4 cup servings
NOTE: Apples will still be slightly crunchy, but that adds to the texture. It’s not off-putting. It’s pretty wonderful.

Yummy!!!! Jamie, u r awesome!! 🙂
Thanks so much!
Thank you for all your hard work and great recipes! My husband is also a big fan, as he eats the resulting deliciousness! What’s with this commercial intrusion???? 100% annoying, Jamie!
Commercial intrusion? Is an ad acting up again?
Thanks so much for your kind words!
For brown sugar, I use a non caloric sweetener and add a just touch of molasses.
Hi! That’s what I do, too! I have a page here on the site that breaks down how much I add, and how much it adds in terms of carbs.
looks great!………..I’ll bookmark it for the future….cause right now I don’t want to disturb my downward spiral …. weight wise 😉
I so totally get that! It’s bros before hoes and hips before lips!
lol…actually I should elaborate some more…..apples for some reason make me hungry…like monster hungry!…….so I have a feeling that they affect my blood sugar levels (although I have never tested it after eating apples) but I have been looking for another topping for my cheese cake (other than strawberry topping) so this would definitley be a must try on a special occasion (like my soon to be bday) or when I am feeling to treat myself in the not too distant future
If apples make you ravenously hungry, it could be an intolerance. People typically allergic to birch pollen or mug wort pollen are typically more prone to apple intolerance.
LOL @ Jamie. I’ve had to drop all carbs again, even the good ones because I feel better without my body releasing so much insulin; but, when I get over this hump I’m definitely going to be trying this topping on a thincle (thin as a pencil slice) of sugar free homemade cheesecake. Jamie, you are amazing!!
You are so sweet! And I am very proud of your determination to keep your blood sugars in check! I am typically really careful around the sweets. It’s too easy to eat them because I enjoy them and not because I’m hungry and really want it. This is another reason I do like the cheesecakes. They’re dense and almost more savory in a fashion.
This looks fantastic. Definitely must try this. I’ve recently discovered brown sugar Splenda. I bet it would work well here.
What do you consider a serving size? I am asking about the low carb apple pecan topping. So many recipes don’t include serving size which is just as important as the nutritional facts.
Hi there! It’s towards the end of the recipe, but just buried enough so as to be harder to find:
YIELD: Roughly 2 cups, or 8, 1/4 cup servings
Lol hips before lips….love that
