It gets hot where I live. It gets so hot that in the middle of the day when you stand a certain way in the yard the sun seems to smite one like the God of the old testament. You lose water and electrolytes just standing there, much less doing some type of physical activity. But I love to be active, cycling and hiking are what I love and so I go early in the morning. It also helps that I do my activities in the woods near my house, which, if not cool, are always shady. The department of parks or whoever they are have kindly laid out hiking and bike trails of varying difficulty. Bless them.
Along with my other gear, I’m careful to take several bottles of resource® Natural Spring Water, Yes, several. Given the way I work out, I can’t do just with one or two and not end up panting, cramping up and dehydrated before long!
You might ask why resource® Natural Spring Water as opposed to all the other bottled waters out there? Heck, why not plain old tap water? Well, let me explain:
Electrolytes
I think of my hiking and cycling with resource® Natural Spring Water as my path to “electrolytement.” Resource® Natural Spring Water is second to none when it comes to the electrolytes we need to keep our bodies in tip-top shape.
When we sweat, such as we will on a hiking or cycling jaunt, we lose not only water. We lose important minerals call electrolytes. These are minerals that separate into electrically charged particles inside your body and turn into ions. One of the most important electrolytes is potassium, which helps muscles contract and relax. When you’re low on potassium, your muscles contract but they don’t relax. That, if memory serves, is called a cramp. Also, loss of electrolytes can impair your muscles’ ability to use a sugar called glycogen, and this is their main source of energy. Of course, if you’re also dehydrated, that can lead to heatstroke. So that’s why I load up on resource® Natural Spring Water during my expeditions, whether I’m thirsty or not.
Resource® Natural Spring Water is a holistic bottled water brand that sustains a lifestyle of well-being – spring water with naturally occurring electrolytes for taste, a bottle made from 50% recycled plastic [excluding label and cap], and a source for discovery and enlightenment.
Oh, by the way, resource® Natural Spring Water is not only good for you, but its load of needed electrolytes also makes it delicious to boot!
Careful with potassium as it can have adverse effects on the heart for some people. I have to monitor my mom’s intake of potassium. No bananas and I have to limit the spinach and tomatoes which are also sources of potassium. She also tends to get dehydrated (hates the taste of water (!) (?)) so it’s a struggle every day.
I just use coconut water–it even comes as powder in envelopes, so I can pour it my gallon jug of filtered water, and drink it all day. It’s great for colonoscopy prep!
Sun smiting you eh? Try Phoenix AZ! Every summer (which is about 5 months long) I question my sanity. It’s like opening the oven door and getting in. Water, Water!
Oh yea.. be careful out there in the AZ summer heat!
