OK, so seriously. I am not going to make excuses over here for being a bum for the last week or so when it comes to updating my menus daily. I was tired and cranky.
Saturday I narfed down some Blue Diamond (they’re like crack) Nut Thins with guacamole (otherwise I ate healthfully). Sunday night I had a burrito shell with full-fat sour cream and a bowl of granola cereal with milk (otherwise I did well). I shouldn’t have, but I did. I ate when not hungry and I was annoyed with myself, but that’s the way it goes.
So I’m up .75 pounds for the week. Oh well. I figure if you can’t roll in the hay on occasion, you might as well eat some!
Unfortunately, add to that that I ate at McDonalds yesterday for dinner as my meal. I had two Big Macs, a medium fry, and a fruit pie from the store.
Hey. Don’t look at me that way. I admitted it. 😛 I let myself get way too hungry yesterday and made a couple of bad choices. It happens. It just so happens I had, erm, three days of those.
The good thing is I’m realizing what my own limits are and how I can make better choices, how certain foods affect me and whether I miss the foods at all (read below for more). I am always happy to provide my own experiments with certain foods, so long as you don’t do the same things because I did it–and you won’t, right?
I am back at the treadmill desk today working up a storm and getting some important tasks completed after feeling a little under the weather for the last week or so. I expect a hearty loss next week and a push forward as we move towards our goals for December 31!
For anyone just joining us, first of all, here’s the plan I’m following, along with the Mid-Year Resolution Challenge. While you look at what I’m doing, be sure to do your thing. I am thrilled to give some ideas, but I’m not the person you should necessarily look to for dieting advice (I’m not a paid nosh-a-titian). I am, however, here with you to cheer you on when you’re so skinny you will have to watch slipping through the cushions of your couch. Be sure to subscribe for updates by adding your email right (in the sidebar) or through Feedburner in the title bar up top! You can also click the tab up top that says Mid-Year Resolution for the daily play-by-play and to see what I’m doing. Whee!
Tuesday, October 23
I ate this:
Breakfast: Skipped. I’m not hungry because I way overdid it yesterday.
Lunch: Green olives + mixed nuts + cheese + pepperoni
Exercise: 3 hours at the treadmill desk
Notes: I’m typically not hungry after a huge meal until well into the next day. I take that as meaning my body is telling me I’m fueled up. And I am!
What I learned:
What didn’t I learn?
I didn’t enjoy the Big Mac after the first few bites, the fries after the first few bites, the burrito shell after the first few bites, or the fruitpie after the first bite.
This tells me my tastes have, in fact, changed. I really prefer the simple textures and flavors of the foods I eat every day versus what I had this weekend in the form of quick, grab and go options that left me feeling a little worse for wear. This makes me think,” Are those other foods really reward foods? Are they really something to look forward to?” Based on the last few days, I say no. Nope.
From my treadmill desk in the Mile High City, sipping on my drinky,
So nice to see you are human! WE all are! Forgive and forget…besides three hours on treadmill is amazing…congrats….eat some bacon as a reward!
Regards,
Glad
Hi, Gladys! It’s at such a slow pace that it’s really not that hard for me to do. I get a lot of work done this way for sure. Thanks so much for your words of encouragement.
Wow! Are you hard on yourself!
Three hours on a treadmill is still three hours! Congrats!
Hang in there!
Glad
I tend to not blow things out of proportion… I don’t think I’m being unkind… Just more or less realistic.
Thanks for being honest and keeping it real. Everyone has bad day(s) but the biggest thing I have learned from you is to just get right back on track because one or two bad days doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world and we can continue on the healthy eating plan. Reading your blog has really helped keep me on track. Thanks for sharing your journey. 🙂
Hi, Gina! I am honest to a fault. I’ll tell you almost anything you want to know–and then several more things you didn’t. 😛
I’ve been away from home. My weight has stayed the same. I cannot remember what I last posted here but I am 87 kg or 191.5 pounds. I seem to have stalled in my weight loss which is a bit of a pain.
So I’m experimenting. LCHF it is. It’s totally scary. I thought that was what I was doing but the recommendations I am following are this ratio. 6% carbs, 14% protein, 80% fats and all in 1050 cals. I’m not hungry on this few calories.
I’m finding it hugely challenging to moderate my protein and increase fats. Perhaps I should grill myself some crispy bacon or pork fat lardons to snack on.
I hate measuring and counting but needs must while I get my head around this and decide whether or not it is worth doing. I think this is similar to Jimmy Moore of Livin La Vida except he will not be restricting calories as I am.
The main reason for this is weight loss and general well being. My excuse is that I need to do something drastic to get rid of some long term skin problems and I’m hoping this will do the trick. Anyone up for a snifter of olive oil.
Laughing aside this is a serious experiment and I’m only on my second day of figuring it out. will tell you how it goes next week.
Blessings
Definitely let me know how it goes. To me, 80% fat seems really high, but I typically stick to roughly 60-65%…
It sounds like we both have arrived at the same conclusion: that “treats” are anything but. I’m away from home at a conference until tomorrow afternoon, and had forgotten how much it truly sucks to go out to eat by myself. However, I discovered (with the help of Yelp and a little sleuthing around) a new favorite restaurant within easy walking distance of the concert hall that hubby and I frequent throughout the year. I’ve had two amazing dinners in a row. Both would be considered “fast food”, but both were well within my plan and left me feeling satisfied and content – not bloated and sick like the pizza place or the taco vendor would’ve. So nice to go for a walk in the Portland drizzle in the early evening, stop in to Elephant’s Deli or across the street at Elephant’s in the Park and enjoy a great meal! I just had a Bistro Burger (angus burger patty with blue cheese crumbles, and bacon-carmelized onion “jam” on a side of kale slaw) and will be just happy as a little clam until sometime tomorrow! Sure beats anything I could’ve gotten a block away at Mickey D’s.
Mary– It’s so especially rough on the road, but I typically do really well on the road, so I have no excuses being at home, save for it sounded delicious and it was free–or I needed to clean out the fridge. Ha ha! I miss Portland incredibly much. Enjoy that gorgeous fall drizzle! I am really proud of your efforts to stick to plan! I am back on track for sure.
Am i missing the weigh in days? This week, I am down 7 lbs… 🙂
Hi, Tina! Woo! Seven pounds is tremendous! I am so proud of you! I missed writing on the weigh-in day. I have been too tired this week and I think it’s because I’m fighting a cold.
Jamie- ((hugs)) One of the things everyone loves about you is YOU! You are honest and real! We all have been, are, and will be where you are. I think you’re amazing!
Aw now. Thank you.
I enjoyed your site better .. Before I knew what you eat every day……sorry
Wenda– that’s fine! I am not posting my daily rituals for everyone–just the ones who have asked. Typically I eat the same things everyday, save for the days I’m developing recipes.
I know what you mean! When I’m getting some food out for my daughter or cleaning up after my husband sometimes I nibble something that Ive sworn off… immediately after it”s in my mouth I’m like eghh not worth it! Just the idea of the food is what I want haha
It really shows how our tastes have changed, hasn’t it?
I will tell you what I learned..I learned I need that birdcage for my daughter’s wedding in August hahahaha. I hope to be lean and not so mean by August. She is having a vintage wedding and I want to find a cute “flapper” styled dress with lots of beading or those wonderful fringes. Since it is straight lined I need to be thinner..thinner thinner. I am excited!!!
Decorative birdcages are so cute. I have like 7. Or 8…
Take heart Jamie! In my experience, an even bigger loss follows when you return to your normal eating patterns after a “cheat” day (or two). The cheats are never that great after all, so it’s easy to return to good habits, which you’ve done, so no worries!
You know, I agree with you. To have eaten as much as I did and only have a .7 pound gain tells me this would have been a whooshie week. If I had refrained from the food choices, I would have done definitely better.
Yep, I agree with you, those other foods are NOT reward foods. It’s hard to change a lifetime of ‘socially accepted’ SAD eating habits. You are back on track though and that is a big BZ (Bravo Zulu) (congrats) to you:-)
I got derailed 3 weeks ago and am now working on getting back on track. I am modifying some of my eating goals by increasing the carbs from my initial goal of less than 20 grams daily to 50 – 100 grams a day. Hopefully this will ease some of the carb craving I was having. I will still keep the high fat and high protein, just making sure that the carbs I eat are nutritious as much as possible.
Linda– I am the same way. I go for the healthy veggie/seed/nut carbs as often as possible and go for nutrients. I will get back to recipe development here and there, and those tend to change my numbers slightly–but not much. With a cold this last week, my taste buds aren’t perfect, either.
Jamie I know what you mean about changing tastes. I have been back to eating properly since about mid-August and I decided that I would allow myself to enjoy all of my favourite foods at our Thanksgiving Dinner. I took a couple of carb blocker pills so it wouldn’t be that bad and then allowed myself to have mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, and broccoli casserole. This is normally a meal I look forward to for each holiday weekend. This time I found that I just didn’t enjoy it as I usually did and it was no problem getting right back on track the next day.
did the same thing this weekend. felt terrible last night and today. crampy, nauseous, ick. not sure if it’s related or for other reasons…
I think if you had something you either normally don’t have or it’s something you know you have an aversion to, it’s a safe bet it was your food! Today I had some corn chips with my nachos just to see how I fare with corn.
God Love Ya…It’s OK! I am 90 day’s into my low carb fair. I really don’t need to lose much weight but a few pounds would be nice. This lifestyle is awesome and seems to work well. I have a cheat day once a week, as we all should! Today was pizza. 9 nice size squares. They were sure delightful going down but 30 min later….Feeling a little fat and buzzed…Ahhh…A carb “High”…LOL So yes, I know what you mean. Every once in a while we must give in to our cravings…Tomorrow is a brand new day!!! By the way, I am so Blessed to have found you!! Love receiving E mails from you daily…Thank you!!!
I have learned a few things over the years. One is that when you stray it’s not the end of the world. Just hop back on the wagon. One would think that is totally obvious, but at times in the past it seemed like going astray would totally derail me for a long time–even for years.
Also some folks deliberately have “off days”.
So, you are doing fine. It is the norm that counts. 🙂
And you know what is so weird? I am down a ton of weight this week. I think some of my choices are actually working! Weird, but I’m taking it! Woot.
