Foiled Again. Chocolate in a great wrap. |
Dark Chocolate is the new plaid. Delicious and rich, chocolate companies seek to thrill our tastebuds with temptations of tobacco, woodsy undertones or the slight acidic romps among fruity teasings. So when Simply Lite came out with their dark chocolate bar, I was mesmerized at the possibilities.
Granted, 50% isn’t that dark. Many of us are accustomed to the more daring 85+ forays into the dark side, so 50% seems hardly a foray, let alone the dark side. Still, with an initially dry experience, immediately followed by the sweet hints of vanilla and then cinnamon as it melts away, the flavor is definitely one of dark chocolate that is to be given some street cred.
For those wanting to avoid sugars in their dark chocolate, the ingredients deliver: Maltitol, Cocoa mass, Cocoa butter, Inulin, Soy lecithin, Natural vanilla and Cinnamon.
And while I am no fan of maltitol, the flavor here delivers for the lowest carb content of any of their bars, a mere 1 carb per 3 squares.
Not as high octane as other dark chocolates, this is definitely my favorite of their products to date. I look forward to seeing what else this fledgling company has to offer.

Maltitol and high octane in the same post reminds me of an "incident" I had.
Thanks for the review!
One of the reasons I enjoy Dark Chocolate (I enjoy 90% Lindt) is because you have to savor it (suck on it). I've seen this brand at TJ's….not a fan of maltitol. Question. Do you have to savor these like Dark Chocoalte or is it easy to eat the whole bar?
I agree, re: incidents. I can't do maltitol well, so I generally avoid the products with the stuff, but in very small amounts, it seems to be fine.
Vanessa, this is definitely why you have to savor (maltitol). I am positive eating even half-to-the-whole bar would create intestinal distress if you're subject to maltitol problems. It's definitely a YMMV, but I'd probably (me personally) only have 2-3 squares at a time, at most, to be safe. In fact, when I wrote the reviews for several of the products, it had to be over a few days (and I never ate more than a couple of squares of the products), since I didn't want to end up with digestive issues.
I really would like to see the company ditch the maltitol for some of the better alternatives out there.
Malitol…yikes. I avoid that stuff like the plague. 5 malitol-sweetened jellybeans left me blown up like a blimp. Not pleasant.
