Who does not have stress in their life? It is a part of life and there are of course stresses we bring onto ourselves too. I know I am a people pleaser, but this can really take a toll of you after a while. Being selfless is a great quality but you will get run down, and well.. STRESSED! On your to do list, include a few things that will help you de-stress. It is not being selfish to get some “me” time, it will actually make you more productive and happier when helping others being your wonderful selfless self. Here are a few things you should try out and incorporate into your routine for a happier, healthier, less stressed you in 2014!
*Massage! This is a biggie in my book. The problem is not having the time or money to get one too often. So if you can book one a week, every other week, or even once a month.. this should really help relax you and reduce stress! If you are strapped for time and/or cash, there is getting your spouse or friend to rub your shoulders. Even if it just for a few minutes, this can really help take the stress level down a few notches. I have a very busy spouse and my time is limited as well, so I work on my knots myself with a foam roller. These can be bought at any Wal Mart, Target, or sporting goods store for about twenty bucks, and they last for many years! I try to roll out my muscles a few days a week for 10-15 minutes. Try it out!
*Meditation and Yoga! Deep breathing can really bring down your blood pressure. Yoga really does help relax your mind and body. I think the key factor in all of these remedies is that you are carving out time to focus on yourself. I have a very active mind that is hard to turn off, so I really do struggle with meditation. I do still give it a go every so often. Even if I can only get in a few minutes, it really does help! I really enjoy yoga all together. I like it even more so now that I can do it without looking like I am doing a skit for SNL and I am the funny girl in the background that is trying to make a joke of it.. but not really. I feel that getting the physical focus and mental focus in sync really works best for me. I feel very relaxed and accomplished after class. There are yoga studios all over nowadays and also most gyms and rec centers offer them as well. If you do not feel comfortable trying something new in front of strangers, try out a yoga dvd at home for a while!
Everyone has their own ways to bring down stress levels. Herbal teas really help some as well as aroma therapy. Some people can really unwind going for a walk or even zoning out on their aquarium watching the fish just swim about. It is easy to get caught up in the day to day hustle and forget about yourself, but eventually you will need to take some steps to de-stress or infliction of bodily harm on a random stranger could just happen 😉
