As a huge fan of organics and Newman’s Own, I am always up to test one of their amazing products to see whether or not it has a rightful place in the lifestyle of people who are trying to avoid most high-carb temptations. So when my husband told me to review Newman’s Own Organics 70% Super Dark Chocolate I thought why not?
One of the things I love about Newman’s Own, aside from donating much of its profits to causes around the world the Newman’s have supported for well over a decade is the honesty in its packaging. Unlike most other chocolate bars of this general size and in this distinctive grouping (dark chocolate, 70%+), which promise 2.3 or more servings, Newman’s Own tells you their bar is one serving.
On the flip side, that one serving (the entire bar)is going to cost you 33 net carbohydrates. Splitting the bar into thirds (or better yet, eighths, as the bar is in 8 pieces) is smarter and brings the numbers closer to what you’d expect to see from a bar that contains only 70% dark plus cane sugar (1/3 will net you 11 net carbs; 1/8 is only 5 net). The good news? No funny sweeteners. This is your average dark chocolate bar with organic the ingredients.
Flavorwise, you’re looking at a dark chocolate bar taste, rich and earthy, with a slightly acidic undertone that mellows into melt in your mouth richness. Still, for the carb count, and while I am a fervent Newman’s Own fan, I would likely recommend some of the slightly lower carb chocolates in the same division.
