It is 2 am in the morning, and I’m wide awake.
I love how eating healthfully clears away the fogginess so that I can complete writing assignments later into the night. At the same time, it’s going to kick my behind later when I crash this morning. I am enjoying working in the quiet, with the soft pitter pat of rain falling outside (we’ve needed it something fierce).
A quick heads up for YLS subscribers: If you want to consolidate the number of notices you receive per day once subscribing to Your Lighter Side, simply click at the bottom of the email to manage your subscriptions. I receive a daily digest of posts. (Yes, I subscribe to myself, too. I want to make sure the emails are sent in a timely fashion and without spamming you to bits!)
Also, I have no control over the types of ads showing up, including political ones. They seem to be on all of the sites. I will be so glad when elections are over. There’s nothing like a big dollop of angsty buzz kill to go with your peanut butter squares, I always say.
Now what I had yesterday… First of all, here’s the plan I’m following and here is the introduction post to the Mid-Year Resolution Challenge. While you look at what I’m doing, be sure to do your thing. I am thrilled to give some ideas, but I’m not the person you should necessarily look to for dieting advice (I’m not a paid nosh-a-titian). I am, however, here with you to cheer you on when you’re so skinny you will have to watch slipping through the cushions of your couch. Monday, September 10
I ate this:
Breakfast: Up at 3 am breakfast special: my experimental meatloaf with experimental sauce.
Breakfast 2: 7 am. More meatloaf. (Don’t look at me like that. I told you I eat the same things over and over). 😀
Snack: 9 am. Cheese wrapped in salami
Snack: 2:30 pm. 12 Honey Dijon Almonds + some cheesecake innards and mousse that ended up on my counter. *sigh*
Dinner: Salisbury Steak (recipe coming)
Late Night: Cottage cheese with almonds and olives
Notes: I’m really hungry today, so I’m eating to hunger. My body is telling me it needs more fuel, so I’m listening. See? I eat! Promise. Some days I’m just not terribly hungry.
What I learned:
I learned that little (non-scale) victories are so wonderful.
- I am bounding up the stairs now (I used to walk up slowly).
- I have more room in my seat in the car when I drive.
- My clothes are fitting looser.
- My skin is feeling like it’s not tightly holding in the fat.
- My thought processes are more clear. My hunger patterns aren’t sending me false signals; I feel true hunger and not merely a reaction to an unstable blood sugar.
- I fought off a massive cold with supplements and diet.
- Little birdies land on my fingers in the woods while I sing (oh, wait. That’s Sleeping Beauty).
It’s definitely not all about weight loss.
It’s about the other good things in life, too. The scale can’t give me those things.
I can, though.
What a nice blog! BTW, I made oopsies and fat bombs this morning. First time. I put some walnuts in the bottom of the bombs. Awesome!!! Planning to have an oopsie this morning with a hard boiled egg and fresh sliced tomato (still getting some from my garden). Have a great day!
So cool! Thank you. Have a fabulous day!
I love the positive affirmations outside of good-eating habits! I am guilty of losing myself in the food, and forget to acknowledge myself for the OTHER accomplishments I am achieving. Thanks for the reminder to get my head out of my plate and look at all the good I’m doing for myself 🙂
I love the way you worded your thoughts, Mari. Poignant.
I am new to your lighter side. I have been on a roller coaster diet for about 4 years now. I settled into the Atkins diet and have lost about 32 lbs so far. It took alot of tight clothes to being able to throw them out because they were too big ! Thankyou for all you stories and wonderful recipes !!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, Joyce. I am so proud of all of your hard work and impressed by your amazing progress. Way to go! Thanks so much for your kind words.
I LOVE this post, Jamie!! I do have a qu estion though. Do you have a recipe for fat bombs I may have overlooked somewhere? I saw something about them a couple days ago on one of the FB pages. I think maybe you had commented on the same post. Anyway, I looked some up online, but was wondering if you had any recipes you like. 🙂
I don’t, Kathy! I tend to eat the Mini Mascarpone bites for fat. I don’t know if they qualify as fat bombs, but they are fatty and luscious and pack only 1.5 net carbs per little dollop of loveliness: https://yourlighterside.com/recipe-low-carb-sugar-free-gluten-free-mini-marscarpone-choconutty-bites/
I’ve never heard of that kind of cheese. Where do you find it? And can you substitute something else in place of it. I think I have all the other ingredients.
That’s because I am lame for not clarifying. It’s cheddar cheese that I wrapped salami around. It is really good and quick in a pinch. I cook a lot, and sometimes all I want is salami and cheese…
OK…thanks!! 🙂
That looks good!!! Can’t wait for the recipe!
“Little birdies land on my fingers in the woods while I sing (oh, wait. That’s Sleeping Beauty).”
LOL! Love it!
I was starting down the road of “and then unicorns flew from my butt and threw glitter in the streets” and knew it was time to draw the line.
Ok…today it is Honey Dijon Almonds….are they Blue Diamond and also from Walgreen’s?
Jamie, your almonds are driving me crazy! That is ok….enjoy them! I need to get to a Walgreen’s that’s all! I want those yummy flavours!
I was up at two a.m. also! It must be contagious!
My day is almost zero carb…
I tried to fry some ham for breakfast…but it tasted awful….fake maple and brown sugar flavour….loaded with carbs…..boy, did I grab the wrong chub! I threw it out…not edible!
So I fried a pork sirloin steak in sweet butter and served it with garlic aioli on the side…yum! And lemon green tea….tiny wedges of lemon significantly improve the taste.
Lunch …a onion flax roll on which I piled torn romain, and a chipotle and celery seed spiced BBQ’d burger…yum…and a vanilla cola….I did it…when Coke was over $5./case of 12…the store brand was on sale for $1.99…….. This budget minded lady had to try the store brand….it was sweeter than Coke….twice as fizzy, with half the taste of actual cola…so, I add 1/2 tsp of vanilla to my glass, then pour the cola freezing cold over the vanilla….delicious! Vanilla cola! Problem of how to actually drink the stuff…..solved!
Dinner will be pork sirloin …again…this time BBQ’d and perfumed with oregano, lemon and my favourite…garlic! I’ll serve myself a great romaine salad…kissed with lemon/garlic dressing! Gee, sounds so good…I can’t wait for dinner!
Yes, Jamie, I too often eat the same thing twice in a day! That way I cook once!
I am sure we all do it!
Love those almonds,

I am trying tom cook less and enjoy food more! I nay used to set once a day…this three times a day diet is so new to me!
Love those almonds,
Glad
Question…is aioli with everything a good substitute for bacon?
Gladys, those are, in fact, Blue Diamond and I also find mine at Walgreens when they’re cheaper there.
Your day looks great! It’s nice to see you embrace simplicity, too. I love cooking less and eating more.
And to answer your question: Is anything a good substitute for bacon? That’s like asking of something else is a good replacement for the air I breathe. I’m having the vapors right now. Where is my swooning sofa…
Hey there, love your blog. Really enjoying trying some new recipes. Been doing Atkins since January to lose some post baby weight, have loved it. Just thought I’d let you know you have a fan over here in South Africa. : )
Micklyn
Hi, Micklyn! Thank you so much for taking the time to send such positive thoughts. Also, woohoo on losing baby weight! I am proud of your efforts. I know it’s not easy with a young one around.
LOL I have ridiculous energy now and I find it so hard to go to bed at night. I’m doing good if I get in the bed before 1 because I have to be up by 5. All of my ads are about food. 😀 I haven’t figured out what the problem is but I seem to be hungry and want to eat all of the time. Maybe I’m not getting enough water in. I think I really do suffer from emotional eating and have a problem. I love eating and really need carb friendly foods on hand.
I am so happy to hear. I can tell you’re exuding energy right now! Being hungry is lame, though. Is it true hunger of your body asking for fuel, or do you think it could be cephalic hunger from being exposed to images of food? It could also be thirst, definitely! Try handling thirst first.
I just ate a great salad from Subway, but for some reason I want more. Granted, it could be that I’m not eating enough. Just thought about it but I didn’t eat breakfast this morning. But seems like the salad would have been enough. Well, I’ll start with water first because I’m not drinking enough.
Subway is a lot of veg. I usually have them double the meat (for a little more money) and make sure they add a little vinegar and oil to add a little extra zhoozh and fat.
Jamie, I need you to put a rush on your meatloaf recipe! I’ve had cravings for it since you first mentioned it!! Your book can wait, right?? Or is the recipe link above and I just missed it? Your picture of the loaf looks yummy!
Kelly
Hi, Kelly. It’s not 1000% where I want it *quite* yet, but I hope to publish it in the next week or so. I want the seasoning just right. I am such a picky eater and a super taster. If I don’t love it, how can I hope that you will, too? I do, though, have salisbury steaks coming early next week and they are amazing. Promise.
Yeah, Jamie, you go girlfriend!!!!!!
*fist bump* *sparkles*
Just to let you all know, there is a carb free bread made by Julian Bakery. They have a website so check it out because they have many breads to choose from and they are yummy. This bread completely satisfies my hunger for bread and it is good for you! Who knew?
Arlene what are fat bombs please???
They’re high-fat confections, like the mini mascarpone bites. Their high fat lends to greater decadence and feelings of fullness.
Good morning. What a fun site today. Lots of good ideas.
Leona
You’ll be my husband’s hero if you’ve come up with a recipe that tastes like “real” Salisbury Steak. Something I know he misses. :o)
Bounding?? I can’t wait for that to happen to me. I really appreciate you sharing your experience. It keeps me … motivated isn’t the right word. Hope, I think, is what your posts give me. I got plenty of motivation from the orthopaedic surgeon the other day. I tore my tendon and am going to have my foot reconstructed. If that ever breaks down, I’ll have to do the “triple” which is where they use long screws to fuse several of your bones (heel, ankle, etc.) together. Ever since that visit, every time I want something off program, I think of that diagram and lose my craving.
Ouch, Amberly! I love how you visualize, but ouch. I hope everything comes out all right. I hate to think of you having to have foot reconstruction. I guess the good thing is if that keeps you mpotivated to lose so you can put less weight on it during healing, that is fantastic!
