Happy Labor Day!
I hope you guys will stay strong on this holiday and remember there are so many decadent options available to you that keep you on plan and fill you up, too! Need some ideas? Check out these Labor Day menu ideas I put together!
Yesterday was rough on me! Not because of my recipes (even the deliciously decadent ones), but because of my snack choices in the form of nuts and soy…and about three SF candies.
Believe it or not, those few things were almost all it took to derail me for an entire day.
You might think the terrific Dessert Pizza recipe I posted this morning would be an issue, but it wasn’t. When I stick to small portions of nuts and maltitol-sweetened sweets, I’m fine. My recipes help me to lose weight. Yesterday I just really over-snacked. I over-maltitol-ed (more on that in “what I learned” below) and the results were almost disastrous. Another reason to journal EVERYTHING (which I’m now doing again, and with gusto).
Now what I had yesterday… First of all, here’s the plan I’m following and here is the introduction post to the Mid-Year Resolution Challenge.
While you look at what I’m doing, be sure to do your thing. I am thrilled to give some ideas, but I’m not the person you should necessarily look to for dieting advice (I’m not a paid nosh-a-titian). I am, however, here with you to cheer you on and help you hold you when you’re so slim you blow away when you sneeze.

Sunday, September 2
I ate this:
Breakfast: Diet Coke (I slept in. Ahhhh)
Lunch: All-beef hot dog, shredded cheese, onion and mustard + Diet Hansen’s Root Beer
Dinner: Red Robin lettuce-wrapped Guacamole bacon burger and a side salad + Diet Coke
Notes: I did really well today! I ate healthfully, had plenty of vegetables, protein, and fat. There’s no TOPS meeting tomorrow since it’s a holiday, so I have to wait another week for an official weigh-in. I drank 2 bottles of water up at the property while working and it was wonderful.
Special thanks to my sweet babboo (pictured right) for keeping me in delicious, grilled proteins!
I exercised:
We stacked wood at the property today, so I was able to stay out of the kitchen a little more and get some fresh air.
Today I Learned:
Sticking with it makes all the difference.
I repeat: Sticking with it makes the difference.
Yesterday I was feeling pretty uggy after eating the soy-laced almonds AND the servings of macadamia nuts. It affected me to the point where I wanted to eat a whole bag of popcorn later.
I had the popcorn in my hands. I justified that I planned to eat it and who would care? I justified “Who would know?” But the answer is, “I would care. And I would know.”
As imperfect as some of my food choices made me feel (the nuts, the SF candies and the soy), I went to my room, read and fell asleep. Today I thank my rational self for putting the popcorn down and for backing away slowly.
It goes to show I’ve grown up. A bloaty, ugh day doesn’t have to get worse. You are always in control.
Even if you feel like you’re *this* close to failure, step back, go to your room, imagine yourself healthy and happy and know that these crazy, out of control feelings only last a few minutes.
Hang in there! We’re a week in! You can do this. I know it.
How are you doing so far?
It’s Monday…I weighed…and I lost seven pounds! So thanks so much for starting this challenge and for all your recipes/inspiration/hard work. So am I understanding this right, you are shooting for 100 pounds by this Dec. 31st? Is that possible? Correct me if I misunderstood!
Deb G
KY
Weigh to go on 7 pounds, Deb! That is phenomenal! Can I lose 100 by the end of the year? Not if I don’ get some exercise in; guess which good habit I’m adding in this week?
Way to go, Deb!!! That’s great!! 🙂
Good girl! I know it’s pretty darn hard to back away from a preferred carb when you’re tired and feeling hungry. That’s one of my worst battles, and one that all too often sucks me under. Late afternoon at work, I often just feel exhausted – and that’s when the darn carb cravings hit. I’m not hungry, I just want. . . . *something*. Blech. I mostly just fix myself a coffee with some creamer (no fridge at work. urg.) and keep going. I’ve gotten to where if I have to stop at the grocery for anything before I pick up my hubby after work, I go at lunch time *after* I’ve eaten lunch. I don’t leave myself time to stop anywhere before I pick up Bruce – ’cause if I do, I’ll head right for the muffins or something high carb & sweet. So I just avoid the whole issue.
It’s not a great solution, but it seems to be helping. A few nuts around 4 pm help, too. I have to really ration them, because I’ll eat all of whatever’s in the bag, but it makes the carb cravings go away.
When I’m home, I don’t snack much at all, but tend to rely on creamy natural peanut butter as a meal alternative, especially in early morning. A little carby, but I calculate it in to the day’s allowance and go from there. I don’t get the “want. . .must have. . . Something” joneses at home, for some reason. Maybe I don’t think as hard = burn up energy just thinking! 🙂
I love the way you think, Mary! You are pragmatic.
Mary – I am exactly the same way. It is at work that I get horrible cravings. I attribute some of it to the high stress in my job. But at my work so many people have treat jars with chocolate. There out to be a ‘law again it’ – just saying.
Hang tough – we can do it !!!!!
Down another 4 lbs :). Major detour from plan yesterday but it was a planned detour and not a binge detour. I do not feel guilty and enjoyed it very much. Back on plan today. Congrats on ypur amazing awesome week!!
Way to go, Kayleen! Getting back up is what it’s all about. Here is to another great week!
I have been on a detour for about 2 weeks now…gained almost 4 pounds and bloated! I started back on track today, except for a handful of peanuts. I know that they are considered a good snack choice for some, but for me they seem to hinder my weight loss. I am going to have to find some high protein, easy to travel with snacks since I am on the road a lot. Thanks for your post and here’s to all having an awesome week!!
I am proud of you for going for it. You’re going to lose that water weight in a jiffy!
Definitely kick the peanuts and try something else. Legumes aren’t as good a choice as almonds, macadamias or sunflower seeds. They tend to stall people and/or cause inflammation.
I have never heard that! Thanks for the info. I am going to get sunflower seeds and almonds to have handy just in case.
There are so many amazing options out there. I especially love sunflower seeds in cottage cheese.
I started the jay robb fruit flush..3 days to jump start then back to low carb..this summer has been rough..my youngest son left in march for the marines and ive been a hot mess since
Thanks so much for his service! I know that has to be really difficult for you, but you will so get through this. You are a mom, after all. Sending you hugs.
My week ends tomorrow but as of this morning I’m down 4.5#. I really want to try your pb Dessert Pizza but I’m afraid to 🙁 I’m still struggling to wrap my brain around the fact that I CAN eat and as long as I eat right, I’ll lose weight. Gearing up for my “last chance” workout this afternoon and hoping the scale shows a good one week total tomorrow 🙂
Then definitely wait! There’s no rush! I am not typically a sweet eater mahseff. 😀
Way to go on 4.5 lost!
7,4 pounds you inspire me:0) Nice to have fellowship with other “loosers”:0)
Way to go, Lotte! 7.4 pounds is pretty stinking tremendous. I am seriously proud of you!
I went out and got the Ninja and my my is it wonderful. Knocked the almonds down to pulp. I want to use that thing for everything. I think I’m going to toss in a tomato and cucumber for my salad. hehe I have a list started of the kitchen must-haves. My fiance’ loves jerky so I can’t wait to get a dehydrator. Yesterday ended my two week induction and I am down 12 pounds (from 269 to 257). I have decided that I want to stay on induction for another two weeks (even though I have a significant amount of weight to lose) then move to OWL. I’m kinda scared of losing weight too quickly and having severe loose skin issues (even though I know it may happen but hopefully not be so dramatic). Anyway my dear, have a wonderful Labor day! And again, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
Erica
I love my Ninja so hard, Erica! And woohoo on 12 pounds down! That is seriously righteous!
I made soft serve ice cream in my Ninja in 30 seconds today, and it was amazing. They are awesome!
I love my Ninja. Your ice cream sounds wonderful. And it’s perfect in this weather, too.
i dont no how you girls are losing so easy—ive been on low carb for 9mo and have only lost 4lbs—i excercise at curves 5 sometimes 6 xs aweek and walk every day–i just cant loose-I HAD BLOOD WORK DONE AND THE DR SAID IT WAS OK-he keeps telling me lose weight and i try so hard but no results.i am so glad u ladies are losing –keep up the good work
Zandi, Some of my best friends lost so so slowly. It’s OK; people who lose not quite as fast also have the tendency to keep it off better as well.
DONT YOU THINK ONLY 4 LBS IN 9 MO IS UNREASONABLE?????? WITH ALL IM DOING THIS SEEMS CRAZY.I WOULD QUIT BUT I LOVE YOUR RECIPES SO MUCH IT KEEPS ME HANGING IN THERE.GLAD THE REST OF U ARE DOING GREAT,Zandi
Zandi, I’m not sure why you’ve lost about half of a pound per month, but if it makes you feel better, a friend of mine was stalled for 6 months? :^o
5 pounds lost despite being sick with digestive problems. I knew going into this I had eaten some things that my body wasn’t happy with last weekend. Paid for it Tues & Wed. Still tried to keep as ‘Primal’ as I could. Keeping carbs between 20 & 50 gms has been a big challenge!
I actually started walking this past week for my exercise. It’s almost therapeutic as I have been walking in a park, only a half mile but I wasn’t doing ANYTHING before that :-/
Jamie, I also did wayyy poorly on my journal and tracking, but I will do better this week, as will you:-) I got frustrated when I was doing entries for the MyFitnessPal to determine calories and nutrition. So I am going to write things that I have eaten in a journal this week, then figure out calories with MyFitnessPal.
My meals yesterday were:
Breakfast: 2 egg omelette w/ cheddar cheese, 3 strips bacon and a lovely double shot iced expresso with about 1/2 cup of half and half, yummers..
snack: 1/4 cup sprouted raw pumpkin seeds
dinner: 8 oz fresh salmon, fried in butter/evoo. The skin got nice and crispy, so it was like salmon bacon! also some steamed cauliflower & broccoli with butter.
It is so helpful and encouraging to see others going for their goals:-)
Five pounds down is so great, Linda! I am proud of your efforts. I am definitely writing things down in my handy dandy notebook and on this site, even if I’m not using FitDay for everything.
Can you tell me more about the sprouted, raw pumpkin seeds?
Yep, The kind I got is from the company ‘go raw’ https://www.goraw.com. I don’t eat more than a 1/4 cup a day (or less). They can be purchased thru Amazon. Ingredients are organic, sprouted pumpkin seeds and celtic sea salt. It is a little high on the sodium side, but balanced by potassium. Very nutritious seeds even if their omega 6:3 ratio isn’t that great.
Oh and by the way, talking about popcorn denial, have you made cauliflower popcorn? I am going to try making some tonight. Just chopped popcorn sized pieces of cauliflower, olive oil, salt and parmesan cheese and bake it.
I have not. I assume it’s like roasting cauliflower, and roasted cauliflower is NOT like popcorn (although still delicious). I love these, though! They’re like delicate cheese doodles: https://yourlighterside.com/low-carb-cheetos/
Thank you for the information on the raw pumpkin seeds. Those sound really wonderful.
Jamie,
Thank you for telling us about your slip ups.
These are the little details that we all do but don’t talk about.
I hear you re: sf candy which works if I eat only two per day.
The popcorn is another issue. To think that “it was in your hands”
and you rejected IT. So proud of you I yam, I yam
Barbo, you are positively an angel for being so sweet! I am such a non-perfect low-carber, but I am so much smarter than I used to be. I know I can stick with this, and I will always be honest because that’s me… so I am so thankful people want to see an honest person’s experiences. I believe in personal responsibility and doing the best with what we have.
I lost .6 lbs but I only started yesterday 🙂 So impressed with everyone here!!! WTG
That’s great for a single day, Arlene!
Tuesday Sept 4th and my weigh in for the Mid-year Resolution challenge.
Congratulations all. What a great group this is. Journalling the good and the bad and recording our stats. Very positive and encouraging.
Lost in the last 7 days 1 kg/2 lbs. Brings my total since I began in January to more than 27 kg/59/5 lbs
Doctor’s visit yesterday and her scales show I lost 4 kg/8.5 pounds in the last two months. I had a big slow down and stall through May to July. Big plus is my blood pressure was very normal. OK so I’m on medication but now I am officially approved to begin experimenting with lowering the amount I take.
Who knew I would be improving my health to this degree in my 70s?
Ketogenic eating works. Hurrah!
I also do a little Fasting. Sometimes it’s a part day but I try to fast at least 36 hours roughly 10 days apart. I am not hungry when I fast and I do not overeat when I break the fast. Cool. It feels good mentally and physically. I feel as though I am beginning to shed the years.
I hope you all have an excellent week coming up.
Blessings
Wow! Way to go on your weight gone, MargiAnne! I love reading what works for you.
jamie, u said u was trying to kick the diet soda—have u ever tried Wylers single packets to go or crystal no carb-no sugar-the lemonade is good-today I had wylers packet over shaved ice from my bullet-its like eating a slushie but bad stuff.its a good snack with a straw and a spoon.oh I forgot I added a pkt of Emergen-C-LITEONLY 5 CALORIE AND 1 CARB TO ADD THIS
Thank you, Zandi. I appreciate the information. I do have some Hansen’s Dier powders you can add to water. They’re like over a year old, though… :^o
I use the WalMart brand of those packets to put in bottles of water. I really like the grape and mango/pineapple. 🙂
Morning Jamie,I saw you mention Pinterest some where, as was just wondering how to find and pin you?
He, Deelizzy! You can pin right from my posts to pinterest underneath the posts, or you can find me here: https://pinterest.com/jvaneaton/ Thank you for asking. Pinterest is my little addiction. I’m kind of paranoid about pinning other peoples’ pins, but I love looking at all of my friends’ boards.
Found you Ms VanBacon!!! LOL.
I should have read this first!
Just getting started again. Need to lose about 30. I am doing the fat fast for 2 or 3 days, then back to induction. Popcorn….oh, that is my weakness. We have a huge popcorn popper at work and when they make it, the smell drives me crazy. It’s my favorite food in the whole world. Now that I am 58 it is so much harder to lose. I am a bookkeeper and sitting at a desk all day is bad. I walk on the treadmill in the exercise room at work for 30 minutes each day. Helps if I have a good audiobook on my ipod. thanks for all you do and for your inspiration. You are loved!
You are so kind, Rebecca. I love reading about your love of popcorn, too! Really, it’s not that high-carb if you have the daily allotment, but I’m not there yet and need my carbs for recipe development and plenty of healthy veggies. I am so proud of your efforts on the treadmill and in your choices!
It is already Tuesday, September 4 and this is the day that I am starting my Mid-Year Goal. I am so anxious to start that that at 2am I have already gone to fitday.com to log my breakfast that I will have this morning at about 9:30am. I have never used fitday before and I loved it! It was great to see the nutrition breakdown and that pie graph to see my carbs and fat ratios. I need to up mu fat so I am going to try a tablespoon of coconut oil for the first time. Tomorrow I am also going to go my first TOPS meeting. I am doing alot of first. In the AM when I get up I will weigh myself and then I will weigh at TOPS tomorrow night. I will not weigh again until next week at the same times also. This will be another first, since I always get on the scale each morning which sometimes detours me for the day. I have been having very bad sciatic pain in my back and legs, but I am still going to try to do 30 minutes of exercise tomorrow. I am excited for the new start so I better get to bed!
I am so excited that you’re so excited you already got a move-on! Yeah, Linda! Work it.
