I have a serious love affair with my treadmill desk.
Having lost 100 pounds since the end of last August (7 months), I’m now trying to walk at least five times per week for an hour while working, to work those slow twitch muscles regularly. It’s my new balance in life of fitness with weight loss.
I find that slowly (key word “slowly”) walking on the treadmill while working helps my mental acuity, builds motor skills, and makes me a more effective, productive creator than simply sitting and typing, which engages almost nothing of my body/mind in the process.
With a treadmill desk, I, by the very act of using it, put in the miles for fitness. It also helps to clear my head, especially during those pressing deadlines.
Walking not only helps me to super focus, it helps burn those calories (sometimes I think my thighs secretly snack when I’m not looking) and improves my motor control (it takes a little practice to work a mouse and a keyboard whole walking, even at a slow pace).
It takes a bit of practice, but I find that the more accustomed I am to writing and walking, the more second nature it becomes.
For some deeper thought and all-encompassing mental projects, sitting helps, but for the day-to-day of writing emails, short posts, and handling simple tasks, it’s really nice. I mean, I can easily work for an hour, and by the time I’m done, I’ve also walked a mile. And it is different from working at a standing desk. My feet and hips hurt more at a standing desk than a walking desk.
At a mile per hour, it might not seem like I need the extra balance and stability of a quality running shoe, but the added comfort and stability of the New Balance 860V3 keep my ankles from rolling while cushioning each step, preventing me from over-jarring my ankles or knees in a careless moment.
Thanks to New Balance, a girl like me who needs a little extra oomph in my step to ensures I can work out and prevent injury.
A girl likes a little stability.
And because I have wider feet, it helps that there’s a little extra room for comfort.
With plenty of cushion for hours of productivity at my treadmill desk, I can work with my clients, create new content and exercise–without ever breaking a sweat over more than a deadline.
Thanks to New Balance, I can do my thing, slim my middle, and build up my fitness painlessly. You just can’t hope for more. Except for some well-placed visits from the liposuction fairy.

you should post your before and after soon … 🙂
i mean before and after pics ..:)
Well, it’s more of a before and during, but there is definitely a measurable difference. I need to re-take my durings because I look like a crazed chipmunk.
Congratulations on your continuing weight loss! Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much, Audra! It felt like I’d never get to 100. Now that I’m there, I’m like, “OK. What’s next!”
Ok, I really, really want one of these! I have a NordicTrak skier. Was the “desk” an actual desk? Was it custom-built, or where did you find it? I really want to figure out a way to do this. If nothing else, I have a tablet that I could figure out a way to clamp onto the crossbar of the skier.
Hey there, hottie patottie!
It is an actual desk that Ikea used to carry. Now you have to find them on Craigslist since they’re not made anymore. You could make your own H-frame desk, though, too. It’s just so easy to fine the Jerker desks instead where they’re available.
This is amazing – and congrats on your fitness journey! Truly inspiring.
Thanks so much! I seriously appreciate it.
Hi Jamie,
Congratulations on the walking desk.
I’m working from a walking desk too, I personally do it for a healthier posture. (meaning I’m convinced that sitting all day at a desk, is unhealthy, where standing and especially walking is more natural for humans.)
As I received lots of questions about it, I blogged about the setup and what I am using on it.
In my case it’s an expensive setup, my excuse to myself is that this is the first real investment in a desk since I founded my company in 1998.)
It’s definitely not a cheap investment, but it’s totally worth it. I agree. The posture aspect is pretty terrific, too!
Looks like we agree on more then I thought we did,
this is my investment

Whoa! That is freaky cool. Where did you score your desk? Mine’s an Ikea Jerker I found on Craigslist. I actually have a second one because my husband, son and daughter like mine so much!
at the bottem, I list everything, with the urls where I bought it.
The website is the belgium Steelcase link.
In the USA, steelcase has another kind of desk (that is not available in Belgium)
Peter Armstrong talks about his setup here, with USA links

This is super inspiring! Thank you for sharing! My husband has a coworker who works at a desk that has him standing all day in an effort to burn more calories. This looks right up his alley! I’ll have to send him this post! 🙂 Thank you!
