World Environment Day!
Today is a day that we can all take a look at ways we can improve our environment. There are many ways to go about this.
Consider riding your bike to work or taking a bus than driving every day. Carry your own refillable canteen of water instead of buying many bottles of water throughout the day. Since this is a food focused site, I thought we could share ways we can control our waste of food. In North America twenty-five percent of the food we buy goes to waste.
Here are a couple of easy steps to take:
Save and eat leftovers! Who says you can’t have meatloaf in the morning?
Make smaller portions, only enough for what you know you will eat. This will help us with weight control too; drop the option for a second helping.
Make your own compost with uneaten foods and fruits and veggies that have gone bad. This will make a free and nutrient rich soil you can use to fertilize your garden!
The Austin City Council voted in support of a city ordinance to require all restaurants over 460 square meters (5,000 square feet) to separate all compostable materials from other waste by 2016. Smaller restaurants will have to undertake the initiative by 2017. This is part of Austin’s goal to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills by 90 percent by 2040.
What ways do you do your part for the environment? What does your community do for the environment? Please share!
I switch off all electronic gadgets when not in use… I am doing my bit for our environment.. Do you?
I do the same! If I am not using an electronic, I keep it unplugged!
