Why is it so hard to just start over?
I really believe it is hard to jump back on the horse because the brain loves the chemical highs it gets from those influxes of carbs. Carbohydrates are so like a drug in many ways.
I know that, like a friend of mine, if I’m off-plan it takes me waking up ill every morning before I finally clean up my act. And even still, by 3pm in the afternoon it is awfully easy to conveniently ignore feeling dizzy and ill for needing a handful of chips.
We jones. We crave. We need that fix. It’s our blood sugar, it’s our brains, but it’s our lives, too.
The good news? We have choices. They may be unexciting, and they may be underwhelming, but we usually ignore our freedom of choice until it is removed from us. Then we realize all too late what choices we could have made, should have made.
Now is the perfect time to choose to make the rest of the year a beautiful one.
Emerge next Spring as a new you, and spend this New Year’s Eve not steeped in regret, but celebrating how far we’ve all come this year because of the choices we have made towards living happier, healthier lives.
You don’t have to be perfect. Just try your best. You can do this!
Welcome home.
You really hit home with this post. I’ve been struggling the past month with health and stress issues. I’ve been eating bad things which makes these issues worse. Thanks for the helping hand up.
Timely post, I just started back in yesterday. I was eating whole grains, some pizza (work lunch), and before you know it I was so brain fogged I couldn’t go to the gym and fell asleep at 8 PM Fri night (missed the whole debate, haha)
Eggs. Low Sodium bacon (I retain water like an O Cello). Egg Cremes from you know where.com, haha. And I DID go to the gym and did a 45 min weight workout yesterday. Today is devoted to Oopsie baking and laundry. Notice which came first 🙂 🙂
Great post! Weight loss is the one area of life that we tend to be the hardest on ourselves when we make a mistake. It’s inevitably gonna’ happen! I messed up a lot trying to learn my multiplication tables in elementary school, but thank God I didn’t give up, ’cause they’ve improved my life tremendously.
I’ve messed up a lot in weight loss in my 50+++ years, but thank God I didn’t give up and quit. I finally found something that worked: low-carb! And I don’t beat myself up if I slip. I’m aiming for Progress…not Perfection!

Thank you!
I really needed to read this today.
(should probably re-read it everyday…)
Again, THANK YOU!
To ew who said s/he had been cheating on pizza at work – I’ve found a work-around for that when you are in a pinch. Scrape the toppings off the crust and eat them with a knife and fork. You would be surprised how little difference there is! I do this at Cici’s all the time. I don’t feel deprived, either!
I recently started over and everything was going well over the last week, then yesterday I was at my nephew’s 2nd birthday party and all my good intentions flew out the window. So I decided that I would have fun and enjoy the party and some good “bad-for-me” food and start over again today. Your post made me feel so much better!
Thanks for that post, Cleo. I am sitting here right now in a carb-induced fog and I haven’t even eaten yet today! I am back on the wagon… 20 lbs to go.
Thank you SO much.
Ok, this is freaking me out. Have you been peeking in my kitchen window?
Yes, thank you, Jamie! I, too, needed to hear this today. I fudged last week and ate BOTH macaroni and cheese AND StoveTop dressing in one meal. Yikes! I spent the next day in the bathroom, needless to say. I’m still not over it. I’m finding it really hard to stay away from the carbs, altho I admit I’m not eating as much as pre-lowcarb. Still. Thanks for the help.
Hey, I like the idea of eating just the pizza topping! That’ll help when my daughter craves Little Caesar’s. I love pizza.
Thanks for visiting my blog, and good luck on keeping your carbs to a healthy minimum. (lol)

I have not dieted for about four or five years. I gave up. But after convincing myself I couldn’t do it I have gotten back on the horse.
Hey, Jamie. I’m sorry I forgot to tell you about linking to your recipe at Examiner. I didn’t see your comment until a minute ago! I’ve got to change my comments notifications. Just so busy.
Blush! You recipes and writing are great!
I am totally with you on the sugar cravings. Since I have cut out the sugar I am just not feeling as hungry anymore.
I’m afraid to start again because I remember how horrible that first week was…
I’m there with you Cleo. I low carbed successfully for a year, stalled for a few months, and for the past 6 months I’ve been in carb hell, eating cakes, candy everything. I finally woke up this weekend and realized I was killing myself slowly but surely. It is an addiction like no other.
Thank you! Like so many others I have been lax lately and hitting the carbs. It’s so easy to stay lazy but being reminded that it isn’t just about weight but overall health hit home with me. Because of your comments I’ll be back on track today! Thanks again!
